"Chapi: A Tapestry of the Soul – Designing NINA Restaurant as a Living Ode to the Dominican Republic"
At NINA, dining is more than a sensory indulgence—it is a journey woven through the vibrant soul of the Dominican Republic. Our design concept, Chapi Design, breathes life into every corner of the restaurant, drawing inspiration from the intricate beauty, resilient spirit, and cultural richness of the island. “Chapi,” derived from the Spanish slang affectionately used to describe something deeply authentic and uniquely Dominican, anchors our vision: to transform NINA into a living canvas where culture spills from walls to dinner plates, from rhythm to atmosphere.
The Walls Speak: Screen Art as Storytelling
At the heart of the Chapi Design concept are handcrafted wooden screens—rejas—that divide spaces with grace while allowing light, air, and whispers of music to dance across the interiors.
Laser-cut motifs echo the spiraling tails of the cigua palmera (palm chat), the national bird, and the geometric designs found in Taino petroglyphs. The interlacing patterns are not merely decorative—they are metaphors for connection, community, and the layered history of the Dominican soul: Indigenous roots, African resilience, and Spanish elegance, all interwoven.
As sunlight filters through these screens in the afternoon, their shadows paint the floors with fleeting stories—moving murals that shift with the passage of time, reminding guests that culture, like light, is ever-evolving.
A Home Away from Home
NINA is not just a restaurant. With Chapi Design, it becomes an extension of the Dominican heart—an invitation to not merely observe culture, but to live inside it.
At NINA, every detail tells a story. Every thread sings a melody. Every color remembers a place.
