THE ST. REGIS HOTEL & BRANDED RESIDENCES,
KANAI, RIVIERA MAYA
HOTEL GUESTROOMS - 124 ROOMS
The Riviera Maya, a stretch of Caribbean coastline on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, is famous for its powder-soft beaches and ancient Mayan ruins. Yet, hidden beneath its lush jungle canopy lies another, more mysterious marvel: the cenotes. These natural sinkholes, formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock exposing groundwater, are sacred oases, revered by the ancient Maya as gateways to the underworld and sources of pure water. Their unique blend of crystal-clear turquoise waters, ancient rock formations, filtered light, and vibrant sub-aquatic life offers an unparalleled sensory experience.
For interior designers seeking a profound and calming aesthetic, the cenote serves as an extraordinary wellspring of inspiration, particularly for creating spaces that evoke tranquility, connection to nature, and a sense of timeless wonder.
The guestroom design is a profound homage to the serene and mystical cenotes, where the dominant motif of circularity echoes the very essence of these natural sinkholes.
Hanging mirrors are strategically placed, designed not just for function but as shimmering portals or reflections of water surfaces within a cavern. Their irregular, organic shapes or perfect circles, often frameless or with a thin, natural material border, catch and diffuse light, creating a dappled effect akin to sunlight penetrating the water below. They amplify the sense of depth and tranquility.
Designed in 2015, long before the Instagram era of fleeting trends, the hotel’s design emerged as a deliberate celebration of enduring elegance. Every custom detail—from millwork, furniture, lightening to bespoke textiles—was intentionally conceived to tell a story, each element a chapter in a narrative of sophistication and purpose.
When the hotel unveiled its doors in March 2023, it stood as a testament to timeless luxury, its design transcending passing fads to create a sanctuary of refinement that feels as fresh today as it did a decade ago. With a vision rooted in permanence, the space is not merely a place to stay, but a legacy of artistry meant to inspire for generations to come.
